Surf Spot Guide
Floßlände Munich
At the Floßlände Munich river surfing was born in 1972 and so was the rapid surfing of today. The relaxed spot with the big meadow at the Isarkanal is just right for the first attempts on the surfboard. In 1972 Arthur Pauli rode the first wave at the Floßlände, meanwhile the spot is considered the official birthplace of river surfing and one of four standing waves in Munich, perfect for beginners. Thanks to an installation, it usually produces a clean green wave with little white water. From time to time rafts or canoeists pass through. Directly at the surf spot there is a large sunbathing area, which invites you to chill out – accordingly, the wave at the Floßlände is also full after work or on weekends. Waiting times of up to 30 minutes are therefore unfortunately not uncommon.
What is the right Surf Level for the Floßlände?
“Whoever surfs the Floßlände well can do it anywhere”. The saying comes from experienced surfers and might be surprising at first: the wave swings up rather pressurelessly, at low levels white water rushes along sometimes. Nevertheless, the Floßlände is not to be underestimated, even experienced Eisbach surfers can improve their balance here and for beginners, the wave at the Floßlände Munich is just right for finding their stance and balance in the first place.
What is the right gear for surfing the Floßlände?
The vibe is very relaxed and welcoming, also to unknown people and beginners – no localism as on the Eisbach wave E1. The wave runs with less pressure, a surfboard with a little more volume, more nose and a flatter rocker line will make it easier in the beginning. Most people here surf with surfboards between 5.0 to 5’6″ length, the good Foamies or Softechs are very popular for beginners. Shorter is always fine, longer is not recommended.
When to surf the Floßlände?
The wave at the Floßlände Munich usually runs between the end of April / beginning of May until the end of September / beginning of October. Since the city diverts the water for the canal from the energy supply, the times are renegotiated every year.
