Surf Spot Guide
The Rock Kabalana
One of the more technical waves in the South of Sri Lanka. Perfect punchy A-Frame Wedges that shape after surpassing a rock further outside in the ocean. The spot can hold bigger swells and breaks more consistent to the left than to the right (providing longer rides for goofy footers / backside regulars). The right hander though can connect with another wave from the Kabalana beach break occasionally which in such case results in long right hander rides. The level of surfers here is at minimum advanced intermediates and there is some local expat crew that can be very intimidating and has low tolerance for surfers of insufficient skill level. Don’t surf here if you are not experienced enough to do so. The wave can build up in size quickly and be quite powerful, especially on bigger days.
“The Rock is one of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka. It catches a lot of swell from multiple directions often creating perfect A-frames. When surfing the rock, go in the early morning from November till April. When its big it gets heavy.” – Lankasurf
