South-East Sri Lanka
Everybody may ride the world-class wave in Arugam Bay, from beginners to pros. Right point breaks abound in the area, some of which are still secret spots. There are beach breaks and point breaks scattered across the region’s natural areas. The same swells that pound the Indonesian coast also affect Sri Lanka’s south-east coast; the best time to expect SW swells is from April to October. With consistent offshore breezes and clear conditions, expect waves of 2 to 6 feet.
Point Break
At a point break, the shoreline juts out into the water to form a headland. A wave that is lengthy, well-formed, and unlikely to close out or break in front of itself is created when a wave strikes a headland or pier and starts to peel down the extended shoreline. Point breaks typically only have one takeoff point and only travel in one direction, so you might have to wait in line to catch a wave. At these specific surf spots, quality prevails over quantity.
