Surf Region Phuket, Thailand

While Sumatra blocks most of the wave jewels produced by the Roaring Forties, the Andaman Sea still produces good waves off Phuket’s postcard beaches more often than you might think. The west coast of Thailand’s largest island, which is only separated from the mainland by a narrow strip of water, offers a good dozen well-known spots where every surfer will find his or her perfect wave. Wave season is between May and October during the rainy season. Onshore winds are common, but because many bays on the west coast are surrounded by hills and mountains, you can often find sheltered corners where the waves form glassy lines in turquoise-blue, 27 °C water.
