Cave Ericeira
On the southern flank of the Bay of the Two Brothers, with an angle of coast still facing south, we find the Cave. This powerful right only started to be surfed recently, having gained immense notoriety in the last years due to its spectacularity and the dangers it involves. It is one of the world’s most difficult and dangerous waves to surf. You’ve certainly seen videos of it or heard rumors about it before; it’s one of those waves that, if you miss the drop, you’ll land on rocks. It is extremely radical, tubular, and risky. It starts on a sudden reef plate that does not connect with land, located at a very shallow depth. The suction of water from the bottom of the wave towards the top is so intense that it breaks below the waterline – hence its name – with the tube that forms there becoming progressively hollower, wider, and flatter as the wave nears its end. The Cave should only be surfed by very experienced surfers, and even these are advised to use protection.
