About Pendleton
The story begins with Thomas Kay, an English weaver who immigrated to Oregon in 1863. He played a crucial role in developing the region’s wool industry, eventually opening his own mill in Salem, Oregon, in 1889. His knowledge and craftsmanship set the foundation for what would later become Pendleton Woolen Mills.
In 1909, Kay’s grandsons, Clarence, Roy, and Chauncey Bishop, purchased a defunct woolen mill in Pendleton, Oregon. They revitalized it and focused on producing high-quality wool blankets. The Bishops capitalized on the demand for Native American-style blankets, which were popular among Indigenous communities in the West. Their vibrant, geometric designs, inspired by Native American motifs, set Pendleton apart from other textile companies.
Pendleton quickly became known for its warm, durable, and beautifully designed blankets. By the 1920s, the company expanded into men’s woolen shirts, a move that proved highly successful. During World War II, Pendleton supplied wool clothing and blankets for the U.S. military.
In 1949, Pendleton introduced a women’s clothing line, which became immensely popular, especially with the rise of the “49er” jacket—a classic wool plaid jacket that became a fashion staple. The brand gained national recognition and was embraced by surfers, rock bands, and Ivy League students, cementing its place in American fashion.
Pendleton remains a family-owned business and continues to blend tradition with modern styles. It has collaborated with brands like Levi’s, Nike, and Disney. The company is also committed to sustainable wool production and ethical sourcing. Today, Pendleton operates multiple mills in Oregon and Washington, ensuring its products maintain the quality and heritage that have defined the brand for over a century.
Pendleton blankets, in particular, are still highly sought after and hold cultural significance, especially among Native American communities. The company even partners with Native artists and tribes to create authentic and respectful designs.
