Surf Spot Guide
Marshmellow Ahangama
“Marshmellow, Ahangama, South Sri Lanka, is a more mellow wave, perfect for intermediate level surfers. It offers easy take-off and long lefts and rights. Altho there is no clear channel, the waves are often mellow enough for you to paddle back without much issue.
The wave breaks over reef making it consistent but depending on the sand and swell direction there are multiple peaks, allowing for many surfers to catch waves. The bottom is 2m depth everywhere on the reef, making it perfect for beginners and forgiving wipeouts.
The paddle out from the beach is long, make sure you have a good condition and are a good swimmer as breaking your leash would require a long swim back to the beach.
Be aware of surf schools and beginners, often letting go of there surfboards causing some dangerous situations. Also make sure to stay in marshmellow as waves in Insight, might look better but can be very shallow.
Waves over 4ft, can turn marshmellow into smashedmellow, the only surfable waves will be lefts. The wall is hollow and the take off more quick. With the right wind conditions it will even make some nice barrels. These conditions only happen about 12 days per year. If you are not advanced+ surfer, its better to avoid surfing marshmellow on big days.” – Lankasurf
